On the road to El Paso

I know I have been remiss in getting this blog posted, but as you may have read, I had computer problems.  The laptop had been acting up for a while, so yesterday I took it in for repairs.  I was tempted to bring a grandson along to fix things in just such an occasion ;-)

The drive from Fort Stockton to El Paso was just a relaxing and pretty drive - scrub brush, oil wells, mesas, and hills as far as you could see.  The elevation gradually rising as we went west, it topped out at about 4,000 feet.  The rocks we observed were also changing from sedimentary to granite.  We entered our third time zone, saw lots of pecan groves, and irrigated fields here and there, too.

After lunch under a teepee ramada, we started seeing the mountains of Mexico to the south and finally the Rio Grande and it’s broad valley.  Lot’s of serious farming and cattle ranching goes on there.

In the early afternoon we pulled into a full hookup RV park which just happened to be next door to a Camping World.  The objective was to catch up on household duties and rig care for a couple days, before we set out for more dry camping.

On the obligatory dog walk, we explored the large campground.  It had been newly purchased by the current owner, whom we met and chatted with on our walk.  It is a nice place and will be even better if he follows through with his plans.

We also met and visited with a man who goes by the name Burr.  He had a portable ferrier’s shop on a trailer next to his RV.  Turns out he cares for horses at a nearby race track.  He gave us a lot of insights on what to see and where to go while in El Paso.  One of his suggestions was White Sands, which I’ll describe in another post.

The next evening when we got back from our white sands road trip, Burr had left a gift on our RV step - a custom made horse shoe memento. Thanks to Burr, a pleasant new friend.

  1. Well bro it's good to see you back on the net. Good to see you got your computer issue rectified too. Sure enjoy reading the blog. Keep up the good work! That gift from Burr needs to be a permanent decoration in the fiver now.
